Here in South Carolina, we have seen a lot of politicians shaking hands as of late. With our “First in the South” designation for the Presidential Primaries, it’s like we are everyone’s best friend. The sad thing is, we are so heavily Republican, once the primary is over, and we will probably not see a candidate for another four years.
Democratic candidates have already come out and stated that they feel that the Confederate Flag should be brought down and off of the State House grounds. Since this was also said by candidates during the last election cycle, there is nothing new to this. What is new is the news that came out this past weekend by the head coach of The University of South Carolina’s football team, Steve Spurrier.
What’s the big news, just a comment that he made on Friday and repeated on Saturday - ““It would make us a more progressive, better state, I think, if the flag was removed “
Although he further stated that he did not want to start a huge campaign or that he was even the person who should be leading the charge, he has certainly instigated a renewed look into the issue. It is one thing for Yankee politicians to tell the state what should be done, it is quite another for one of two of the major college football coaches to say it.
