Today is the anniversary of the freeing of all slaves within the District of Columbia in 1862. This was one of the many steps that would eventually lead to Abraham Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation.

Care to guess how many news stories will appear today about it?

Normally, I would say none too few but today will be different. Today we will see citizens of the District of Columbia march for representation within Congress. And yes, the organizers picked the date on purpose – trying to show the plight that the citizens of the District have been from its founding.
