So awhile back I posted about my adopted home state of South Carolina and the effort to get the South Carolina Civil War Sesquicentennial Advisory Board established.
I had a misunderstanding or two when trying to contact the legislature sponsor of the bill to establish the committee but that has been smoothed out. So much so, I received contact from his office this weekend to give me an update.
Now, South Carolina has a few problems going on right now – what state doesn’t? It has the oldest fleet of School buses, which the Charleston Paper just did an expose on. Hurricanes seem to be on the mind of insurers and they are dropping coastal accounts by the dump truck full. (Just a reminder for those in the State Government reading this – when it was the law that any insurer who wanted to insure cars, had to offer home insurance, I don’t seem to remember this being that much of an issue. I could be wrong though). Added to that there is a problem or three thousand in the Department of Transportation and there are words of reform being thrown about. With all of this going on, a bill on a committee might be forgotten.
So, long story short, it looks like the bill will finally make it in front of the full education committee in the next couple weeks. Hopefully I can make some contacts with the different State Senators over the next few weeks and see that it makes it to the floor.

So as Donald spent yesterday heading to Richmond for The American Civil War Center At Historic Tredegaer’s conference “In the Cause of Liberty: How the Civil War Redefined American Ideals”, I was doing yard work with my son.
Donald has quite an itinerary set up that will probably leave barely enough time to sleep. While in Richmond, he hopes to see some of the other sites and plans to update us all next week on the grand adventure.
My yard work had a little to do with the Civil War, at least in name. A few years ago my parents planted Confederate Jasmine all around their fence and it has literally grown so much; you can’t see the fence now. It is a viney plant that flowers throughout the summer and has a wonderful smell, filling the area up with its scent.
This weekend I was at Lowes and they had some for sale, so I picked up a few for my yard. Now my little Union house has a bit of the Confederacy gracing my yard. Of course, I couldn’t find anything on why they are named what they are but I’ll keep thinking there is some great story behind it.

Uhm, hello.
You are right, it’s been a long time. But I’m back. Really, I swear, this time I am back.
Where have I been?
No where really, hanging out with the family for the most part. That’s been fun and will continue but now I have some extra time.
I did keep up with the other blogs, reading them and wishing I could get a thought out. No thoughts would come though and I just kept not writing.
I came close to buying the DVD, “The Confederate States of America” at Target. It was cheap and in the Indies section, I just decided to buy a CD of the group “Say Anything” instead. The Synth Rock group Depeche Mode (which believe it or not is still huge) once said (paraphrasing) you could get away with anything if you put it to a happy beat – this group certainly tests that.
Oh and somehow I am now in a Cricket Club. They had me when they said the games where at least 8 hours long and you got to drink adult beverages with them. Doubt I’ll ever learn how to play but the drinking should be fun.
Believe it or not - I have a few things but they are being quite annoying right now. So, I thought I would start off with just a little link to a series of regimental recruitment posters – mainly in the NY and NJ areas. Check them out here. Makes me wish I could find one on the 18th.
